We went to Lake Harmony in the Pocono Mountains over spring break this year with Joe’s family and we had a great time! I wasn’t sure what to expect as I hadn’t been to the Poconos in years and the only time we’ve been with the kids was to stay at Skytop Lodge (I wrote about it here). Joe’s parents rented a house across from the lake which was really nice and conducive to slow mornings and provided plenty of space for us to spread out. While where we were wasn’t quite walkable (no sidewalks) and I didn’t notice any type of walkable “town” per se, there were a few restaurants that were pretty good and within a 5 minute drive on or near the lake!
P.S. This 100% cotton funnel neck capelet is a hero wardrobe item- I’ve worn it so many times already either layered over a long sleeve t-shirt with leggings or alone over cozy shorts for warmer weather.
THINGS TO DO IN LAKE HARMONY
Visit Jim Thorpe
We spent about a half day in Jim Thorpe but there was so much to do here. You can visit the train museum, the Old Jail, and the Asa Packer & Harry Packer (Disney’s Haunted Mansion is modeled after this one!) mansions (we were so bummed they were closed when we went!)! There are also tons of places to shop and eat!
I was so taken aback by this incredible field of boulders. Boulder Field is located in Hickory Run State Park and is National Natural Landmark. It was formed around 20,000 years ago by a glacier and has remained pretty much untouched since then. It was wildly beautiful and really cool to get to walk out onto the boulders.
This was a relatively short hike, maybe a little over a half mile, which was great for our group with 4 kids. Hawk Falls is part of Hickory Run State Park and though it’s just a small waterfall (25 ft), it’s still really beautiful and worth it to see.
Go Fishing
We took the kids to a stocked lake for their first time fishing and they all really loved it! They each caught 2 fish and the woman who cleaned them for us let them watch and explained the process and how we show respect for the fish (and the circle of life) by only catching what we’re going to eat.
There’s so many more things to do in the area like visit Big Pocono State Park, see Pocono Raceway, play paintball, go fly fishing, hike on any of the multiple trails in any of the State Parks, ski at Big Boulder in the winter, participate in water sports in the warmer months, or just relax with a lake view (get more information here!)!
