Once April gets here, I’m more than ready for long summer days spent outside, minimal layers, and easy throw on and go dresses. In the northeast, though, we’ve still got some time until we feel the full heat of the summer sun, so layers continue to be a must. Most days we’re dressing for warm sun and cool air and I really love cotton pieces for these temperatures. Cotton is breatheable, layerable, and as a natural fiber, it’s also durable and moisture-absorbent. Did I mention it’s also usually machine-washable?!
I love dresses like these because there’s minimal thought involved in getting dressed and they look just as good dressed down with sneakers and a baseball hat as they do with sandals and a clutch for dressier events.

It’s no secret that I love color and I think a pop of color in your shoe is often an overlooked detail. It’s an easy way to infuse some fun and whimsy into your look and I find that shoes that are more saturated show less dirt and wear and tear. Add a hat or a bag that either mimics or compliments the color or your shoes, especially if the rest of your look is neutral.
A cotton sweater is a must-have for layering year round. This one is under $50 and comes in a ton of colors, solid and striped. I’ve tried similar styles for double the price and this one holds up and wears just as well!
